Although ladies golf dresses are still quite popular Josh Jackson Packers Jersey , most serious female players practice and compete in more casual attire. Sleeveless blouses, Bermuda shorts, and skorts are incredibly common sights on any contemporary golf course. Golf is one of the few mainstream sports that women have participated from almost from the outset. According to sports historians, the game originated in Scotland during the 15th century, but may have been influenced by much older precision club and ball activities. The first record of the game was when James II, who reigned as the King of Scots, outlawed it in 1457, reportedly because it was a distraction to learning archery.
Ironically, it was one of his distant progeny, Mary Queen of Scots that was responsible for popularizing the sport in the UK. Also known as Mary Stuart, the queen regnant of Scotland adored the game and played it on a regular basis. She was one of the few women in the world that was considered by enthusiasts to be a serious female golfer.
The history of how Mary got involved with the game is a bit sketchy. But since her grandfather, King James the IV was the man who lifted the ban in 1502, in part because he himself was an avid golfer, it logical to assume that she learned it by his side. Because of her love of the growing sport, Mary earned the moniker “The Mother of Golf.”
Not only did she play at the Old Course at St. Andrew Scotland, which is the oldest golf course in the world, she is said to have kept a cottage there. Both men and women followed her lead and the sport became quite popular in the UK…that is until Mary lost her diadem, along with her head.
Female participation in the game subsequently entered a fallow period. It took more than two centuries to organize the first female tournament, which was not surprisingly held in Scotland. A half a century later, the first golf organization for women was formed at St. Andrews. By the end of the 1900s, the game had made its way to America, where it was an instant hit. Golf tournaments and an amateur system were established in a few short years.
